The generalized Kramers’ theory for nonequilibrium open systems

چکیده
The Kramers’ theory of activated processes is generalized for nonequilibrium open systems. We consider both the internal noise due to thermal bath and the external noise which are stationary, Gaussian and are characterized by arbitrary decaying correlation functions. We stress the role of a nonequilibrium stationary state distribution for this open system which is reminiscent of an equilibrium Boltzmann distribution in calculation of rate. The generalized rate expression we derive here reduces to the specific limiting cases pertaining to the closed and open systems for thermal and non-thermal steady state activation processes. We analyze the behavior of a Brownian particle moving in a double-well potential. The escape probability of this particle over the potential barrier from a metastable state toward another state is known as the Kramers problem. In this work we generalize Kramers' rate theory to the case of an environment always out of thermodynamic equilibrium reckoning with non-Markovian effects. We consider a ...
متن کاملKramers ’ theory for an external noise driven bath
We consider a system-reservoir model where the reservoir is modulated by an external noise. Both the internal noise of the reservoir and the external noise are stationary, Gaussian and are characterized by arbitrary decaying correlation functions. Based on a relation between the dissipation of the system and the response function of the reservoir driven by external noise we derive the generaliz...
متن کاملMean-field "temperature" in far from equilibrium systems.
We calculate the nonequilibrium mean-field "temperature" of a brownian system in contact with a heat bath. We consider two different cases: an equilibrium bath in the presence of strong external forces, and a nonequilibrium bath. By proving the existence of a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation, this mean-field "temperature" can be used to describe a nonequilibrium system as is if it w...
متن کاملNonequilibrium work relation from Schrödinger’s unrecognized probability theory
Jarzynski’s nonequilibriumwork relation can be understood as the realization of the (hidden) timegenerator reciprocal symmetry satisfied for the conditional probability function. To show this, we introduce the reciprocal process where the classical probability theory is expressedwith real wave functions, and derive amathematical relation using the symmetry. We further discuss that the descriptio...
